{ uk wine }Pinotage Explained

Posted on Thursday, 15th November 2007 by RedLeaf

Let's keep it simple. Wine is made from grapes. Different grape varieties give wine a different flavour or character. Pinotage is a variety of grape. To make things a little more complicated it is actually a cross between two other grape varieties (Pinot Noir and Cinsault) and it is almost all grown in South Africa, where it was first discovered. To be perfectly honest, it is fair to say that Pinotage has is share of both fans and those who say they can't stand the stuff. But, in the hands of a master such as Beyers Truter it is quite another story. In the words of the nursery rhyme: 'When it is good it is very, very good'.
Over the last 10 years Pinotage has come into its own and achieved world wide recognition at the higher price levels and can compete with some of the very best wines in the world. Beyerskloof Pinotage is the standard bearer at the more affordable end, showing that Pinotage also makes excellent wine that doesn't break the bank.

'… to my delight, the Beyerskloof Pinotage in my glass is juicily ripe, elegant, fruity and silky.' Jonathan Ray. The Telegraph
